eBay has just released its sales and profit forecast for its fourth quarter. Although the company’s PayPal business has seen its revenue rise, eBay is expecting sales and profits to fall during Q4.

Gloomy outlook States side

So, what’s the reason for this gloomy outlook? Well, the answer lies across the pond. The boom in online shopping rates in the States is slowing down. eBay has said that it expects to see sales figures of between $4.5bn (around £2.8bn to us Brits) and $4.6bn in the run up to Christmas.

Consequently, the company’s shares have fallen by up to 5% in the US.

As sellers know, the fourth quarter is a key period for eBay sales, and weakening economic conditions in the Sates have prompted this cautious outlook.

This is in sharp contrast to the same period last year, when eBay’s net income rose by 15% for the third quarter. The net income of $689m was partly down to an increase in mobile trading on eBay

eBay reported net income for the third quarter of $689m up by 15% on the same period last year. This was helped by growth in mobile trading on the eBay auction site.

Meanwhile, increased UK consumer this Christmas

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic things are looking more positive. Market research firm Verdict are predicting renewed consumer confidence in the fourth quarter. According to pundits, the misselling of credit card insurance and privatisation of Royal Mail shares may have a pleasantly surprising knock on effect!

People have been busily buying shares in Royal Mail and selling them for an instant profit. Many people have also had a cash injection from payouts over missold credit card insurance. So, this all means that There’s more cash floating around and this could be the best fourth quarter for seasonal spending since 2007.

Maureen Hinton of Verdict has predicted that we’ll see consumers spending an extra £1.9bn this Christmas compared with last year (2012).

So, it’s a case of swings and roundabouts. eBay might lose out in the States, but things may finally be on the up in the UK.
